Political Soapbox
I see a soap box. I must kindly take the stage today, and say something on the eve of this all-important election. I can easily say that I am quite possibly one of the least political people on the planet. 99% of the time, I simply don’t care, but this year sparks a whole new interest in politics. Not only are we making American history with the presidential candidates, but California, one of the most progressive states, is attempting to take 10 giant leaps backwards into archaic-y (yeah yeah, not really a word, but people get to make up their own stuff all the time, so I’m a-gonna do the same!).
For the most part, I am definitely the person who’s going to side with logic. But at the same time I’m also going to side with each person having the choice and right to their opinion, even if it’s not the same as mine. When in a group setting, I will often play the devil’s advocate, for a side I don’t even believe in, just to get people to see something more. Think just a little bit more.
One of the most controversial propositions in California right now is Prop 8. Right-wing religious nutcases are on their kick of taking away people’s ability to get married. A yes vote, for those not hip to what’s carrying on here in California, means that Gay couples will no longer be able to get married.
Here’s where I take a stance. It doesn’t matter what you believe with regard to homosexuality. You can believe it’s a disease. You can believe it’s a lifestyle (like being Goth, or Punk). You can believe that people willingly choose it just to be “different.” Whatever you want to believe, that is your opinion. It’s not my job to educate or change your mind. What I have problems with is that these religious nuts, particularly the Mormon church, are saying that it’s against god’s law/code/rules/whatever. Look. Religious freaks! Seriously… you are the reason why I renounce any denomination and a belief in god.
Marriage is not a political issue. Marriage should not be “a law” that can be given or taken away from anyone. Marriage is a show of commitment and love. Doesn’t matter who the other person is sleeping in your bed. It really doesn’t.
Who am I to tell a heterosexual couple they’re not allowed to get married because it doesn’t fit into MY PERSONAL religious beliefs? Who would mock me? Who would be the first to laugh in my face merrily on the way to the chapel? Yeah, you religious nutcases who seem to think that this stance on marriage is your calling from god.
My personal opinion? How about we create laws to stop crack-heads from being able to have babies who are doomed for a life of trouble and health problems? How about we tell women that after 20 kids, they’re not allowed to have any more? Oh wait, it’s okay for people to have babies they can’t afford, because it’s a MAN and a WOMAN! Oooohhh… Excuse me while I slit my proverbial wrists for the cause.
Really? We can’t tell women they can’t have children, that it’s a choice. We tell heterosexual couples that they can CHOOSE to get married, or not. But we’re going to “put our foot down” when it comes to homosexual marriage?
Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this picture? No, obviously I’m not. But the religious psycho’s need to get off their pathetic high horses, walk amongst the truly living human beings, and see what the world is really like.
The world, and everyone’s desire for “world peace” will not come if we are constantly fighting stupid battles here at home. Let them marry. Let them live the same life we would. They’re people. They’re human. Let them be who they are, and live how they choose.
It has never been anyone’s right to tell another when and where they can or cannot be married. Why are we starting now? And why in California, of all places??
